Ronald Dion DeSantis was born on September 14, 1978, in Jacksonville, Florida. He grew up in Dunedin, a suburb of Tampa Bay. DeSantis attended Dunedin High School, where he excelled academically and athletically. He played baseball and was named a McDonald's All-American nominee.

DeSantis earned a scholarship to play college baseball at Yale University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 2001. While at Yale, he was also a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.

After graduating from Yale, DeSantis attended Harvard Law School, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2005. Following law school, he entered active duty in the United States Navy and was designated a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer.
